Where to go for drinks in Mechelen: Local bars & Belgian beer
Mechelen and beer go hand in hand. The city is home to Het Anker, one of Belgium’s most storied breweries and the maker of Gouden Carolus, a rich ale named after Emperor Charles V, who grew up here. Pair that with a lively café culture around the Grote Markt, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a great evening out. On this page we share our favorite spots to grab a drink in Mechelen.
KUUB (CULTURE CAFE)
Mechelen’s go-to culture café. A buzzing spot where live music, comedy nights, and everything in between keep the energy alive.
De Gouden Vis (BROWN CAFE)
Mechelen’s most famous café, with an art deco interior, a riverside conservatory, and a long list of special beers. Open until the early hours, it’s always buzzing.
Bar Popular (COCKTAILS)
A classic brown café on the lively Vismarkt, with a southern twist. Think cocktails, tapas, a monthly DJ night, an inner courtyard, and a lounge on the first floor. A local favourite with a laid-back vibe that works equally well for a quiet drink or a lively night out.
De Minnestreel (BROWN CAFE) – (temp. closed)
A no-frills, traditional bar just off the Grote Markt: clean, unpretentious, and exactly what a good local pub should be.
Unwined (WINE BAR)
A tiny, cosy wine bar in the shadow of Sint-Romboutstoren, where owners Koen and Miriam share their passion for wine and offer personalised recommendations.
Kafee Zapoi (ROCK BAR)
A kultuurkafee with dust, people, good beer, and plenty of noise, with regular live music and events. One of Mechelen’s most characterful spots.
Bar Moemoe (COSY BAR)
A friendly, cosy bar right on the Grote Markt with a lively crowd and a great selection of beers, including rotating suggestion beers that keep things interesting.
d’Hanekeef (OLDEST BAR IN MECHELEN)
Mechelen’s oldest bar, dating back to 1886. The building once stored cockerel cages used in cockfighting, and the walls are still covered in rooster imagery — a living piece of Mechelen history with over 50 beers on the menu.
De Pekton (OLD-STYLE BAR) – (temp. closed)
Self-proclaimed loudest bar in Mechelen, with rockin’ tunes and the occasional live show. A wide range of Belgian beers, historic architecture, good music, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
